Women’s tennis beats Tufts for the first time since 1996
In its first non-conference dual match of the season, the MIT women’s tennis team hosted local rival Tufts University and came away with an 8-1 victory. The win broke a 16-match losing streak to the Jumbos and was the first victory by the Engineers since the 1996-97 season.
Men’s cross country ranks up
Even though they did not compete this past weekend, the MIT men’s cross country team moved up one place to fourth in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III National poll that was released on Wednesday afternoon. The Engineers, who received the program’s first-ever top five ranking in the poll that was released on Sept. 25, keep making program history as they continue to climb up the ranking’s ladder.

It was a successful start to the 2013-14 season for the MIT rifle team as the Engineers downed the Wentworth Institute of Technology. The two teams competed in just the air rifle event, with MIT coming out on top by a score of 2,184-1,873.
MIT football falls just short of win over Curry College
MIT had a first and goal with just a little more than a minute to play, but the Curry College defense held the Engineers out of the end zone as the Colonels held on for a 26-21 win in New England Football Conference play this afternoon. Junior Justin Wallace (Palatine, Ill.) led MIT (2-2, 0-2 NEFC) with 104 yards on the ground while Curry (1-3, 1-1 NEFC) saw Phil Bigelow ’14 and Trae Weathers ’15 run for 86 and 85 yards respectively and a touchdown each for the Colonels.
New England Revolution looks for playoff bid
As MLS nears the end of regular season play, the hunt for a playoff spot is becoming heated. One of the teams competing for a spot in the playoffs is the New England Revolution. On Sept. 19, 2013, I had the chance to interview New England Revolution rookie midfielder, Scott Caldwell right after their practice and ask him about how the season has been so far, their chances for playoff qualification and how it feels to be a professional athlete at an age where most of his peers are in a university.

Moving back to dual match action after playing last weekend at the ITA New England Regional Championships, the MIT women’s tennis team returned to New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference play with a contest against Clark University. The Engineers maintained their perfect dual match record so far this season, scoring a 9-0 win against the Cougars. Vynnie J. Kong ’15 came up with the match-clinching victory for MIT in the No. 3 singles contest.
MIT men’s soccer team won 3-2 over Babson on Saturday
In its first meeting since the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament semifinal last season, the MIT men’s soccer team had an exciting 3-2 win over Babson at home on Saturday afternoon, with three goals being scored within three minutes at the end of the second half. Austin E. Freel ’16 tallied two goals, the second being the game-winner that was scored with just 50 seconds remaining on the clock. Tech is now 5-3 for the season and 2-0 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers dipped to 7-3 and 1-1 in conference action.
MIT beats WPI in a 2-0 victory
Molly K. Duffy ’13 scored twice in the second half, lifting No. 17 MIT to a 2-0 victory over WPI in a NEWMAC field hockey game on Saturday. Madeline L. Wharton ’13 and Caitlin A. Mackey ’14 both earned an assist while goalie Evie Kyritsis ’16 did not miss a save as she earned her fourth shutout of the year for the Engineers (9-0, 2-0 NEWMAC).
MIT Women’s Volleyball improves to 10-5 on the season, 2-1 in league play Engineers victorious over Mount Holyoke College in straight sets: 25-23, 25-13, 25-22
The MIT women’s volleyball team battled Mount Holyoke College for a 25-23, 25-13, 25-22 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory on Tuesday night. With the win, the Engineers improved to 10-5 on the year and 2-1 in league play while the Lyons dipped to 8-3 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

On the heels of their outstanding performance at the Toni Deutsch Regatta, MIT sophomores Rosalind R. Lesh ’16 and Lisa Sukharev-Chuyan ’16 were selected as the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Sailors of the Week. The duo finished first in the B Division by a margin of 28 points to help the Engineers secure second place out of 17 squads in the competition.
MIT Field Hockey wins 3-2
Michelle H. Teplensky ’13 and Molly K. Duffy ’13 accounted for all of MIT’s scoring in a 3-2 NEWMAC field hockey victory over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon. Teplensky produced two goals and an assist while Duffy had one goal and an assist for the nationally-ranked No. 19 Engineers (7-0, 1-0 NEWMAC).
